March 2019 Book of the Month Giveaway

March was a good reading month for me. Everything I read rated four stars or higher, and I had multiple five-star reads. This made my choice of which book to name my Book of the Month a tough one, but I finally decided on the lesser-known of the two romances that garnered this rating and the one that gave me tons of feels. It’s the second book of a series that follows the same couple throughout, and they are such wonderful characters that I wanted to share them with my readers, too.

Makenna and Caden started their journey in book one, while stranded in an elevator in the pitch dark. This made getting to know one another a true meeting of hearts and minds, since they couldn’t see each other. As book two begins, they’re still together and going strong, but things don’t exactly go as well as hoped for when Caden accompanies Makenna to meet her family on Thanksgiving. After that trip, he starts to think that perhaps she deserves someone better than him, someone not quite so broken in mind and spirit. This sends him into a downward spiral of clinical depression and a major flare-up of his PTSD. He has to fight hard on his journey back to wholeness, and in turn, they must fight as a couple for that elusive HEA ending.

Caden is total sweetheart, but definitely one of the more tortured romance heroes I’ve read. A terrible car accident when he was twelve that claimed the lives of his mother and brother has left him scarred both inside and out. All he wants is to help people which is why he became an EMT. But the rapid progression of his relationship with Makenna and the intensity of his feelings for her leave him with a major fear of losing her, too, if he admits to just how much he loves her. Makenna is a kind, compassionate heroine who loves Caden to distraction and wants nothing more than to stand by her man, but he reaches a place where he’s too afraid to let her, which broke my heart a little. But she never gives up on him finding his way back to her. Through all their ups and downs, these two never stop loving one another and fighting for their happiness.

Theirs is truly a beautiful love story that tugged at my heartstrings. My heart hurt for Caden as he battled his anxiety, depression, and PTSD, but it also hurt for Makenna, who was left alone, wondering and worrying. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to find out how they were going to find their way back to one another. This was a deeply emotional story that broke my heart a little, but mended it back together with a sweet HEA ending. I also have to give the author kudos for her portrayal of mental illness in a very realistic and sympathetic way. Caden and Makenna are two characters who I will forever cherish and who’ll always be near the top of my favorite heroes and heroines list as well as being one of my all-time favorite romance couples. That’s why I’m naming Laura Kaye’s Love in the Light as my March Book of the Month. If you enjoy deeply emotional contemporary romance with a tortured hero and the heroine who wants to heal him in an intense but tender love story, then you should definitely give this book a try. Love in the Light Book Cover

Cover Blurb-

Two hearts in the darkness…
Makenna James and Caden Grayson have been inseparable since the day they were trapped in a pitch-black elevator and found acceptance and love in the arms of a stranger. Makenna hopes that night put them on the path to forever—which can’t happen until she introduces her tattooed, pierced, and scarred boyfriend to her father and three over-protective brothers.

Must fight for love in the light…
Haunted by a childhood tragedy and the loss of his family, Caden never thought he’d find the love he shares with Makenna. But the deeper he falls, the more he fears the devastation sure to come if he ever lost her, too. When meeting her family doesn’t go smoothly, Caden questions whether Makenna deserves someone better, stronger, and just more…normal. Maybe they’re too different—and he’s far too damaged—after all…
