August 2016 Book of the Month & Giveaway

August was an excellent reading month for me, mostly consisting of five-star reads, but one stood out a little above all the others. It’s the second installment of a new family saga from an insanely popular author that’s filled with drama, angst, mystery and yes, romance. It’s all about the incredibly dysfunctional Baldwine family trying to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of the family patriarch’s presumed suicide that soon starts looking like murder instead. It’s also about all of the dirty deeds in which he engaged prior to his death that have ripped the family to shreds and nearly destroyed their bourbon-making business that’s been the family’s legacy for centuries, and how the members of the family must start pulling together to survive the fall-out. I’m totally hooked by this series and can’t wait to read more.

Tulane is the youngest son who becomes the unwitting and somewhat unwilling savior of the Baldwine family. With his love, Lizzie, by his side, he finds himself tasked with saving the company and holding the family together through dark times, as they discover the extent of their father’s treachery. Edward, the oldest, is the family’s protector. He’s been trying to live the quiet life of a horse trainer, while putting his life back together and sharing a bittersweet romance with Sutton, a business rival and the love of his life, but his shocking revelations will rock the family to the core. Errant middle brother, Max, returns to the fold with a cloud of mystery and suspicion hanging over his head. Then there’s Gin, the youngest of the family and the only daughter, who pines for her love, Samuel T., who doesn’t know they share a child, while marrying another man who severely abuses her.

If this all sounds a lot like a soap opera, you’d be right. If you were a fan of the old nighttime soaps of the 1980s or if you’re more hip and modern, but can’t get enough of dysfunctional families like The Originals who have a love/hate relationship with one another, then this series might just be what the doctor ordered. I personally loved everything about this book. The characters vibrantly came to life, and I very much enjoyed following along with all their ups and downs. The ending was shocking, and heart-breaking, and it nearly killed me, but it also has me already eagerly anticipating the next installment. That’s why I'm naming J. R. Ward's The Angels’ Share as my August Book of the Month. If you enjoy contemporary family sagas that are an emotional roller coaster ride full of angst and drama then you should definitely give this book a try. Keep reading to learn how you can win a copy for your own library.

#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward delivers the second novel in her Bourbon Kings series—a sweeping saga of a Southern dynasty struggling to maintain a façade of privilege and prosperity, while secrets and indiscretions threaten its very foundation…

In Charlemont, Kentucky, the Bradford family is the crème de la crème of high society—just like their exclusive brand of bourbon. And their complicated lives and vast estate are run by a discrete staff who inevitably become embroiled in their affairs. This is especially true now, when the apparent suicide of the family patriarch is starting to look more and more like murder…

No one is above suspicion—especially the eldest Bradford son, Edward. The bad blood between him and his father is known far and wide, and he is aware that he could be named a suspect. As the investigation into the death intensifies, he keeps himself busy at the bottom of a bottle—as well as with his former horse trainer’s daughter. Meanwhile, the family’s financial future lies in the perfectly manicured hands of a business rival, a woman who wants Edward all to herself.

Everything has consequences; everybody has secrets. And few can be trusted. Then, at the very brink of the family’s demise, someone thought lost to them forever returns to the fold. Maxwell Bradford has come home. But is he a savior...or the worst of all the sinners?
